In the past 30 years, infant thrush become a commonly acquired infection in babies.

Thrush in infants can make life difficult for both babies and moms. While thrush is normally not life-threatening, it can lead to significant health concerns, such as gastrointestinal distress, food allergies, asthma and other diseases related to inflammation. Most commonly, it makes babies miserable. It can also weaken their immune systems.

Baby mouth thrush is more than an annoyance; it can easily become chronic without the right kind of treatment. Thrush develops because a babies’ immune system is too weak to fight off the yeast that causes thrush. Once yeast takes hold, it excretes toxins and causes inflammation, making the immune system work even harder.

Thrush is generally caused by the yeast strain candida albicans; however over the past decade different strains of yeast have become much more common. The yeast species can make the thrush even more difficult to treat, as many of them are more resistant to anti-fungal drugs.

Because anti-fungal drugs are frequently ineffective and have potentially very harmful side effects, natural treatments offer effective and healthy alternatives for treating infant and breastfeeding thrush.

Thrush treatments often need to be modified depending on how old the baby is who has thrush, whether the mom also has thrush, or whether the child is older, such as a toddler or school-age child.

Child thrush is extremely prevalent and can appear in a number of different ways; for example, sometimes yeast in children may be seen as oral mouth thrush or at other times there may even be vaginal yeast. Many children have yeast overgrowth that is growing unseen to the eye in the intestinal tract and it may even be in the bloodstream.

While this type of hidden yeast is harder to spot first hand, it is just as or more harmful than the yeast that you can see. Yeast infections in kids can cause or contribute to a host of health problems. Why? If you think about the areas that are externally infected with yeast, you’ll see that the skin or tissue in the mouth is inflamed, red, painful and it loses its integrity as the yeast invades and penetrates.
